HCDFRS is proud to be part of the Howard County community and is devoted to providing fire protection, rescue and emergency medical services to the area. The Ellicott City Volunteer Fire Department (ECVFD), established in 1888, was the first formal fire department in Howard County, created to organize a community firefighting team in the event of a fire. The ECVFD, along with the Howard County Fire Services Department (HCDFRS), operates two fire stations, four engines, three ambulances, a heavy rescue squad and two brushing units. In 1991, HCDFRS implemented a customer service program to ensure that the department is meeting the needs of its citizens. This program includes providing educational materials on fire safety, offering free smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, and providing free home safety inspections.
The HCDFRS also offers a variety of other services to the community such as public education programs on fire safety, CPR classes, and fire extinguisher training. In addition, HCDFRS provides assistance with home safety inspections and smoke detector installation. Furthermore, HCDFRS offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for those interested in helping their community.
